Student Activities and Educational Programs in 2002

Student Activites:
The effects of chlorine dosing with livestock lagoon wastewater on fecal coliform bacteria and residual chlorine were evaluated through during the 2002 summer months.  (1 graduate student - Stefanie Ruckers)

A lab lysimeter study involving two different soils and chlorine dosing with livestock lagoon wastewater and tap water was initiated.  Soil and water samples are being extracted from different treatment cells to assess the effects of chlorination on “soil microbiology” and chemistry. (1 graduate student - Stefanie Ruckers; 1 undergrad student – Sara Fjell)

A field study with four different microirrigation tubing products and livestock lagoon wastewater was initiated.  All four products were heavy wall, polyethylene pipe drip tubing products.  Two were designed for use with wastewater, and two had pressure compensating emitters.  The products range in cost from $0.40/m to over $0.80/m.  The study is evaluating the longterm performance and maintenance requirements of those products.  (1 graduate student - Ergun Dogan; and 1 undergraduate student – Jason Amy)

A lab study was conducted to evaluate the effects of varying water temperature on drip emitter water discharge rates, the effects of physical tension and elongation of drip products, and the effects of product elongation on emitter water discharge rates.  These tests were a continuation of the drip tape performance standard tests. (1 undergrad student – Ryan Krueger)

Educational Programs
The livestock Wastewater SDI system is part of the Kansas State University, Waste Management Learning Center.  In the summer of 2002, approximately 100 agriculture business representatives and consultants attended an irrigation management session that included information about SDI use and management of wastewater.  A similar program was held for two undergraduate classes (about 20 students in each class) of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) and Agricultural Technology Management (ATM) majors at Kansas State University.

Inservice education provided to approximately 30 Univ. of Nebraska and NRCS staff at Hastings, Nebraska concerning all aspects of SDI, March 20, 2002.  Inservice provided by Freddie Lamm.
Numerous producer visits and discussions about SDI at Northwest Research-Extension Center in 2002.
