   ASPARAGUS

Oregon Vegetable Production Guide

The station has run a variety trial of five asparagus varieties: Jersey Giant, Jersey Knight, Mary Washington, UC 157, and Delmonty 361. This trial was designed to compare asparagus varieties for yield, grade, and canning quality. Spears are graded according to canning industry standards based on diameter and shape, and each grade is weighed. Grade is determined by the spear shape and size. If it is a grade "1" ,the spear would be straight, and if it is bent it would be grade "2" . The crowns were planted April 7, 1994 and the spring of 1996 was the station's first harvest of this asparagus.
