Plant Disease Control Guide

The station plants several types of small grains each year. Different varieties of soft white wheat (winter and spring), hard red wheat and hard white wheat. New varieties are being developed by university, USDA, and private breeding programs. In Oregon new varieties are evaluated in the Oregon State University State Wide Variety Trial, testing them for three consecutive years in 11-12 locations in the Pacific northwest.

In addition, the station addresses the problems and concerns of local growers. For example, the station is currently testing the yield of spring and winter wheats depending on the timing of the planting in hopes of increasing overall yield for the grower.

Both wheat and sugar beets are being tested as soil nitrate "sop up" crops following shallow rooted crops for nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency and groundwater protection from nitrate contamination.
