2008 Treasure Valley Weed Tour
Presented by the OSU Malheur
Experiment Station

   June 5, 2008 from 9 AM - noon

Pesticide recertification credits are being requested for Oregon and Idaho.
Crops visited during the tour will include onions, sugar beets, field corn, alfalfa, and yellow nutsedge biology.  There will be an opportunity to visit a potato study that is being conducted on a grower field for those interested.

What happened in 2007: Topics for the 2007 Malheur Experiment Station Field Day 

Tour A: Weed Control. Participants learned about weed control in Roundup Ready Sugar beets and options for the control of yellow nutsedge.

Hosts for this tour were Joel Felix and Joey Ishida.

Tour B:  Drip Irrigation, “Permanent” Drip Irrigation and Wildflower Seed Production

Participants learned various applications of drip irrigation including the possibilities of “permanent” drip irrigation and wildflower seed production. 

Hosts for this tour were Hilary Parkinson, Jim Klauzer, Erik Feibert, and Clint Shock.

Tour C: Onion Production.  Participants learned about iris yellow spot virus, thrips control including biological control, thrips movement, thrips resistance to insecticides, onion varieties, irrigation criteria and scheduling, drip irrigation, and the use of PAM to control erosion.

Hosts for this tour were Lynn Jensen, Erik Feibert, Jim Klauzer, Krishna Mohan, Chelsey Iida, Clint Shock, and Ashley Saunders.

Tour D: Cereal Tour.  This tour viewed the Waxy and Conventional Barley Variety Trial, Optimizing Nitrogen Rate and Use of Ethephon in Waxy Barley Trial, and the Waxy Wheat Variety Trial and the Oregon Winter Elite Yield Trial of soft white winter wheat.

Hosts for this tour were Steve Norberg, John Hamilton, Eric Eldredge, and Heather Noble.

Tour E:
Tour E: Saving Electricity: Operating Motors Efficiently on Single-Phase Power

Participants learned about how to run efficient three phase electrical motors on single phase power without a phase converter.  Malheur County folks are already using this method save money pumping water, etc. 

Hosts for this tour were Otto Smith and Phyllis Smith.

Cooperating to bring you Field Days include the OSU Malheur Experiment Station, OSU Malheur County Extension Service, University of Idaho, Malheur County Soil and Water Conservation District, Malheur Watershed Council, Owyhee Watershed Council, USDA NRCS, and the Lower Willowcreek Working Group.
