Climate

Climate in south-eastern Oregon varies greatly with elevation. The higher elevations experience colder temperatures and higher precipitation than the lower elevations. The region is extremely arid and experiences great temperature variations. It is considered high desert, with many areas with annual precipitation less than 10 inches. Summer temperatures often reach 100 degrees in the lower elevations.  Nighttime lows may be 30 to 50 degrees lower than daytime highs.  Winters can be bitterly cold here, although there is little humidity. The mountains can receive heavy snowfall. If visiting the region during the summer months be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms and chilly evening temperatures.  ALWAYS CARRY WATER WHEN LEAVING MAIN HIGHWAYS IN THE HIGH DESERT.  It is always prudent to tell others where you are going and when you expect to return, so they can advise authorities if you do not return as planned..
