Riparian areas are
important for the
many animals and plants that they support. Riparian plants help hold
soil in place and protect water quality. At this station the kids
learned about the different types of plants that live in Riparian
Areas (areas near lakes, streams, rivers and
ponds).
The kids learned a key for remembering many of these plants:
To plant a tree cutting like a willow or poplar you first cut it off the tree. Then you cut the bottom, which will go into the soil, at a 45o angle. Put the end with the 45o down in the soil. Water it everyday and in about 1 month it will have roots and can be planted outside permanently.
Some interesting riparian plants in our area include:The Owyhee Watershed Council's
educational
activities are supported by the
Oregon Watershed
Enhancement Board.
