Riparian Vegetation

Riparian areas are important for the many animals and plants that they support. Riparian plants help hold soil in place and protect water quality. At this station the kids learned about the different types of plants that live in Riparian Areas (areas near lakes, streams, rivers and ponds). The kids learned a key for remembering many of these plants:

To plant a tree cutting like a willow or poplar  you first cut it off the tree. Then you cut the bottom, which will go into the soil, at a 45o angle. Put the end with the 45o down in the soil. Water it everyday and in about 1 month it will have roots and can be planted outside permanently.
